Southeast Kentucky Chamber Recognizes High School Seniors for the Work Ethic Award

PIKEVILLE, KY (May 13, 2024)—The Southeast Kentucky Chamber has selected four high school seniors as the recipients of the Work Ethic Award Essay Competition. The Chamber awarded each of the students a $500 prize.

At the beginning of each school year, area high school seniors are invited to commit to participating in the Work Ethic Award program. Over the course of the year, they are judged and earn points on the following criterion by teachers and guidance counselors: attendance, punctuality, discipline, achievement, community service, dependability, respectfulness, cooperation, and work ethic. Students must also watch a series of videos from local business leaders on leadership, punctuality, dependability, and work ethic. After watching the video students must submit a quiz to show what they have learned.

This year seven students from Shelby Valley, East Ridge and Jenkins Middle High Schools completed the Work Ethic Award program showcasing their commitment to work ethic and an ability to achieve at the highest level. The students who complete the program are also invited to compete in an essay competition to win a $500 cash prize. The essays must outline their goals and plans after high school, whether it be entering the workforce or post-secondary education.

Two students from Shelby Valley High School, Russ O. and Johnathan B. as well as two students from Jenkins Middle High School, Jasmine C. and Alyssa F. are the winners of the 2024 Work Ethic Award Essay Competition.

“It is an honor each year to award those students who have gone above and beyond their daily expectations to complete this program,” said Jordan Gibson, Southeast Kentucky Chamber president and CEO. “The Chamber and our board of directors know the importance of a strong work ethic, and we are committed to challenging and recognizing the students of our region through the Work Ethic Award program.”
