Patton Leadership Institute Explores Workforce Innovation in Magoffin County
SALYERSVILLE, KY — Participants in the Southeast Kentucky Chamber’s Patton Leadership Institute recently spent a day in Magoffin County exploring leadership, economic development, workforce training, and the rich history of the region. The visit, held on March 5, 2026, gave the emerging leaders participating in the program valuable insights into the initiatives and partnerships shaping the future of Magoffin County.
The day began at the Magoffin County Health Department in Salyersville, where the group heard from Dr. James “Pete” Shepherd, Public Health Director. Dr. Shepherd shared insights into what it takes to successfully manage and lead a team, while also providing an overview of the wide range of services the health department provides, from medical care and preventative services to vital community outreach efforts.
Participants also heard from Jimmy Salyer, Magoffin County Economic Director, who provided an update on recent economic innovations and development efforts taking place across the county. Cody Prater, Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager for Peoples Bank, spoke with the group about the practical realities of leadership in the workplace, discussing the daily challenges and responsibilities leaders face while guiding and supporting their teams.
Following lunch, the class traveled to the TEK Center where President and Founder Angie Reynolds shared the inspiring story behind the center’s creation. Reynolds explained that she launched the workforce training facility following the pandemic with a deeply personal motivation.
“I did it for my son,” Reynolds told the group. “So my son could have the opportunity to stay here, work, and still make a good living. That grew to include a lot more sons and daughters of Eastern Kentucky along the way.”
While touring the facility, participants were able to see the hands-on learning experiences offered at the TEK Center. From a replica home used for electrical and construction training to heavy equipment simulators and welding stations, the group witnessed the practical workforce development opportunities available to students. One member of the leadership class even suited up to test out the welding equipment firsthand.
The day concluded with a visit to the Magoffin County Pioneer Village, where Todd Preston, President of the Magoffin County Historical Society, welcomed the group. Preston guided participants through the historic log cabin village and shared stories about the region’s heritage while highlighting artifacts and displays. The village includes several historically inspired structures, including a post office, a homemaker’s cabin, and a one-room schoolhouse, complete with a working bell that members of the group enjoyed ringing.
The Patton Leadership Institute, hosted by the Southeast Kentucky Chamber, brings together emerging leaders from across the region to develop leadership skills, build connections, and gain a deeper understanding of the communities they serve.
Through visits like the Magoffin County session, participants are able to learn directly from local leaders while experiencing the innovation, resilience, and history that shape Southeast Kentucky.
