Patton Leadership Institute Explores Healthcare & Heritage in Pike County
PIKEVILLE, KY — The Southeast Kentucky Chamber recently hosted the Pike County session of its Patton Leadership Institute, giving participants an in-depth look at the organizations, leaders and initiatives shaping the future of Pike County and Eastern Kentucky.
The day began at Pikeville Medical Center, where cohort members toured several areas of the hospital, including the Mettu Children’s Hospital, the Cardiac Cath Lab and the Lawson Cancer Center. Following the tour, participants gathered in the 11th Floor Board Room to hear from Kandi Justice, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer; Lisa Kendrick, Vice President of Marketing, Public Relations, Grants and Events; and Stormie Adkins and Vickie Justus, both Assistant Vice Presidents of Physician Practice.
Speakers shared insights into the growth and continued expansion of PMC’s healthcare services, as well as upcoming initiatives and investments aimed at improving quality of life throughout the region. Discussions included the renovation of the Intensive Care Unit, the recent addition of a drive-thru diagnostic lab testing service and the upcoming AVA Academy childcare center.
“Every time we grow or expand into a new service area, we’re not just strengthening healthcare access for our region, we’re creating meaningful jobs right here and helping build a stronger future for this community,” said Lisa Kendrick during the session.
Following the visit to PMC, the cohort traveled into downtown Pikeville for a closer look at the city’s growing arts, tourism and small business landscape. At the Appalachian Center for the Arts, Executive Director Shannon Kirkpatrick-Daniels spoke with participants about the impact of the arts on community development and tourism before leading a backstage tour that highlighted the work and coordination required to bring productions to life.
The group then visited FaithLife Market on Division Street, where they heard from Jill Dotson, Executive Director of Tourism and Pikeville Main Street, and Pikeville City Manager Reggie Hickman. Participants also took part in a conversation with former Kentucky Governor Paul Patton, namesake of the Patton Leadership Institute, discussing the importance of leadership and community investment.
The day concluded with a visit to the Big Sandy Heritage Center Museum, where participants explored the rich history and cultural heritage of the Big Sandy region and reflected on how preserving local history contributes to regional identity.
The Patton Leadership Institute, hosted by the Southeast Kentucky Chamber, is designed to cultivate informed, engaged and community-minded leaders from across the region through immersive educational experiences and direct interaction with local and state leaders.
