Patton Leadership Institute Class of 2024 Holds Second Session In Magoffin County

PIKEVILLE, KY (November 7, 2023) – The Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce hosted the Patton Leadership Institute’s (PLI) second session in Magoffin County on Thursday, November 2, 2023. The cohort visits a different county each session. PLI will visit Martin County on December 7, 2023.

The PLI Class of 2024 met at the Magoffin County Health Department, where Public Health Director, Pete Shepherd, DMD spoke with the group about the services and education the Health Department provides to the local community. Magoffin County Judge/Executive, Matthew Wireman spoke with the group about the values of leadership in an ever-evolving world. Jimmy Salyer, Magoffin County Economic Director, spoke about adventure tourism in the county and the exciting projects on the horizon to boost the local economy. Magoffin County Water District Director, Dwayne Arnett spoke about how vital water is to regional infrastructure and economic development.

The group then traveled to the Magoffin County Historical Society where the society’s president, Todd Preston, led participants on a tour of the property known as Magoffin County Pioneer Village. Log cabins from all over the region have been disassembled relocated and reconstructed on site. Todd Preston and a team of fellow history-lovers worked to find, dismantle, relocate, and rebuild each cabin by hand. PLI participants had the opportunity to see an old post office, a workshop, living quarters and even a one-room school, all preserved in pristine condition and staged as though they were still in use.

Patton Leadership Institute is a leadership development program of the Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. PLI is made up of leaders from across the Chamber’s eight-county region. Participants attend nine sessions over a nine-month period, and the curriculum weaves together topics crucial to the development of community such as education, economic development, healthcare, energy, tourism, and government. Leadership skills are integrated into each session.
