National Civics Bee Essay Deadline Extended to February 17

PIKEVILLE, KY — February 3, 2026 — The Southeast Kentucky Chamber announced today that the essay submission deadline for the 2026 National Civics Bee has been extended to Monday, February 17, 2026 at 11:59 PM, due to widespread winter weather. This extension will allow middle school students additional time to participate and submit their essays.

The National Civics Bee, organized in partnership with The Civic Trust of the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is designed to inspire young Americans to engage in and contribute to their communities as active citizens. The competition encourages students in grades 6–8 to explore how government works and how they can play an active role in shaping the future of their communities.

To enter, students must submit a four-paragraph essay identifying a problem affecting their community and proposing a thoughtful, realistic solution. Local essay finalists will then be given the chance to compete at the Regional Competition of the National Civics Bee, hosted by Southeast Kentucky Chamber, at the Mountain Arts Center this spring. During the event, students will participate in a live civics-based quiz round, with the top five finalists moving on to present their essays before a panel of judges.

Students will have the opportunity to win up to $500 at the regional level, with first-, second-, and third-place finishers earning a spot at the state competition, traditionally held during the Kentucky State Fair. The state winner will advance to the National Civics Bee finals in Washington, D.C., and receive up to $1,000 in cash, along with a $5,000 donation to their school.

“We’re happy to see the submission deadline for this program be extended, especially considering the winter weather we’ve experienced recently,” said Merisa Ferrell, Director of Programs and Media for the Southeast Kentucky Chamber. “Civic education is vital to the future of Eastern Kentucky. The students participating in this program are likely to be our future leaders, entrepreneurs, and elected officials. It’s important that they feel a sense of ownership and belief in the future of their communities, especially if we hope to see these bright minds stay in Eastern Kentucky.”

The National Civics Bee is open to all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students with no cost to participate.

Educators, parents, and community leaders are encouraged to help spread the word ahead of the new submission deadline.
