The only requirement is that all animals must be pre-registered\; the service is not based on income or residency guidelines. Those who bring animals will be asked to make a voluntary donation and the amount and type of the donation is entirely up to them. Monetary contributions will be most welcome\, but anything the organization can use to help animals (like dog and cat food\, beds\, crates\, leashes\, etc) will be appreciated. "Our mission is to get as many dogs and cats spayed and neutered as possible. The owner's income is not an issue for us\, all we care about it saving lives of animals." said Cindy May Johnson\, President of the Appalachian SPCA. \n \nThe Appalachian SPCA is working closely with the Pike County Animal Shelter to rescue animals slated for euthanasia. When rescued\, the dogs and cats are given vet care\, housed in private foster homes\, and made available for adoption at local events as well as on the internet. The staff at the shelter does not ever want to euthanize animals as a means of population control\, but the only way to effect that change is to stop unwanted litters and facilitate adoptions of those animals the shelter takes in. \n \nJohnson said\, "We're working with the shelter to get animals into foster homes\, to do off-site adoptions\, and to get as many spayed and neutered as possible. We understand the Pike County Humane Society has recently announced a spay/neuter program for low-income households\, and we're delighted to see this effort increasing.
